What’s the Deal with Crystals?

You know how we’re always talking about crystals and we see lots of imagery around chakras and crystal healing? Maybe you even joke about it? Been there. But secretly, I wanted in. I wanted to know the deal with crystals.

I’m still a beginner when it comes to crystal work, but I have to tell you – they are addictive. Luckily, crystals are a super affordable habit if you have a good local supplier. That’s the best way, anyway, because I love to feel the vibes off of a tray of crystals and choose one that feels good to me, even if I know what kind of crystal I want when I walk in there.

Anyway! I digress. Let us begin.

What’s the deal with crystals and energy?

A blue bowl on a wooden table holds an assortment of crystals.

Okay, so a crystal (or crystal, the property) is not just a rock, okay? It’s different in its makeup. The Healthy Maven describes it like this:

“Crystals are solids that form by a regular repeated pattern of molecules connecting together. This uniform structure is what makes a crystal a crystal. A rock, such as granite is not a crystal because it does not have a uniform structure. Whereas a crystal, such as amethyst is made up of the mineral, quartz.” The Healthy Maven, 2018

So there’s the geological side of things out of the way. But where does the energy come from? The idea is that each crystal has its own energy frequency that interacts with our own body and mind’s frequencies to promote spiritual, physical and emotional healing and energies.

Right, so how do I do it?

First, choose your crystals. There are a bounty of different types of crystals, and with each having its own frequency and powers, there’s bound to be at least one to suit you. I personally have three or four crystals that I keep around myself as much as possible. Those are:

Red Jasper

Ten smooth Red Jasper crystals.

This one’s been around forever in terms of being used. The Ancient Egyptians used it, the Germanics and the Vikings. These days, this stone is a beauty, and my definite favourite. It is known as The Stone of Endurance, and promotes energy, physical healing, stamina, endurance, and for me is one that I keep on me at most times to promote the healing of physical ailments that are ongoing.

Ruby in Zoisite

Two green and purple Ruby in Zoisite crystals.

This one’s a beauty, and I wear mine in a necklace on days when I feel the need to be more connected to my spirituality, or times when I feel like I need a bit of help. Crystalsandjewelry.com says that, “Ruby Zoisite will enhance the connection between your heart and your brain.” So basically, it brings what you desire together with what you need, helps you to connect with your spiritual side and also aids with releasing suppressed anger or emotions, feelings of self-deprecation and self-regard, and can ease emotional or mental overload.

Citrine

A cut citrine ring sits inside a clam shell.

Citrine is a classic beginner’s crystal, and one that I use a lot. It’s used to deflect and remove negative energies from your body, mind and environment, protects against bad intent and bad energies (like nightmares or ill-intentioned spirits) and is a ripper (excuse the Australian in me) for attracting prosperity and our favourite thing ever, ABUNDANCE. So this is your go-to for manifestation. More on this beauty here.

What do I do with them?

As I do, wear them in a bra, in a necklace, or in your pocket. Hold them when you’re mulling something over or feeling anxious. Say hi to them in the morning. Have them watching over you while you do your Witching. Soak them in your bath. There are so many ways to use crystals – you can even get zero-waste glass water bottles with crystals in them. No joke. I don’t have one, but I will get one, because you can never have too much good luck, you know? Well And Good has a handy beginner’s guide to using healing stones here.

What’s the upkeep?

It makes sense, right, that anything that we use to suck negative energy out of ourselves or places is then holding onto that bad energy. So, we need to cleanse and charge our crystals.

Some incense burns in a wooden holder. A crystal sits next to it.

  1. Cleanse: literally wash them. Hold the crystals under running water while you think about the favours they’ve done you and the great things you’re going to do with them. Put your focus onto the crystal.

  2. Charge them under the Moon. Yep – wait until it’s a full moon, and after you give your crystals a bath, dry them carefully and place them under the moon. You can either put them outside (this is ideal, if you have the space), or if, like me, you live in a ground-floor apartment with no outside space, line them up along the windowsill for the night.

  3. Smudge them with incense or sage, empowering them and keeping them nice, clean, charged and energised with all the good stuff.

Now that you’ve begun your journey with crystals, I’d love to hear what you think. Get in touch and tell me which ones you use, what you do with them and how much you love them. Even better, post a picture of your crystals in use on Instagram with the hashtag #bosswitchcrystals. I’ll do mine if you do yours!

Namaste,

xxK
